Hi friends,

Many of you are enjoying the school break here in South Africa and spring
break in the northern hemisphere.  With Ramadan, Passover and Easter all
coinciding, enjoy this time with your loved ones.  We are very involved with
planning for the second term, our online classes and of course the very
exciting space tour!

LIVING MATHS SPACE TOUR 2023

3 Cape Town venues and 2 Joburg Venues confirmed

After the sold out events with Prof Arthur Benjamin the Mathemagician and
Janet Ivey from Janet's Planet in March, we are delighted to announce that
for the Living Maths Space Tour of 2023 we have retired NASA Astronaut,
Nicole Stott arriving in South Africa in May.  This will be a high profile
event and will be on most radio and TV stations as well as in the newspapers
and on Social Media.  We are just giving you a heads up the three Cape Town
venues and the 2 Gauteng venues are now live on Livingmaths.com and you will
be able to get tickets before the hype.  We have shifted the presentation a
little earlier so that the junior space fans can enjoy the show.  There will
be a few prizes for best dressed Space-themed. Bring your cellphone with as
there will be a fun Kahoot quiz at the end and the top three participants
will each win a cool prize. You can book tickets here:
https://www.livingmaths.com/?page_id=2078

Nicole Stott is an Astronaut, an Author, an Artist and an Aquanaut.  She is
flown to space twice and she has done a space walk.  She is excited about
coming out to South Africa!

ONLINE CLASSES

Our Second online Cycle will be starting up for students from K-9: Please
note that the classes will take place on Thursdays and NOT Wednesdays.  Due
to an increase in our online activities for schools around the world, we
have made this Cycle only 4 weeks long.  We will commence Cycle 2 Thursday
13 April and it will come to an end on Thursday 4 May 2023. This will only
be a 4-week cycle. For more information go to livingmaths.com Online
classes. Classes are filling quickly. One week left to register.

Dr Lori Glaze.

Dr. Lori Glaze is the Director of NASA's Science Mission Directorate's
Planetary Science Division. Planetary Science is focused on space flight
missions and scientific research that address fundamental questions of solar
system formation and evolution, including understanding planetary
environments that can (or could have in the past) support life. Before
coming to NASA Headquarters, Dr. Glaze served as the chief of the Planetary
Geology, Geophysics and Geochemistry Laboratory at Goddard Space Flight
Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and as the Deputy Director of Goddard's Solar
System Exploration Division. Her research interests include physical
processes in terrestrial and planetary volcanology, atmospheric transport
and diffusion processes, and geologic mass movements. Her work focuses on
data analysis and theoretical modeling of surface processes on all the
terrestrial solar system bodies, particularly the Earth, Venus, Mars, the
Moon, and Io. She develops statistical, analytical, and data management
methods in support of physical process modeling and develops applications of
diverse sets of terrestrial and planetary remote sensing data. Dr. Glaze was
a member of the Inner Planets Panel for the 2013-2022 Decadal Survey
(Visions and Voyages) and had a role on the Executive Committee of NASA's
Venus Exploration Analysis Group (VEXAG) for several years, serving as the
group's Chair from 2013-2017. Dr. Glaze was a member of the Planetary
Science Subcommittee from 2011 to 2013. She has been involved with many
NASA-sponsored Venus mission concept formulation studies, including as a
member of the Venus Flagship Science and Technology Definition Team (2009),
as Science Champion for the Venus Mobile Explorer (2010), and Co-Science
Champion for the Venus Intrepid Tessera Lander (2010). Until her move to
Headquarters, she also was the Principal Investigator of the Deep Atmosphere
Investigation of Noble gases, Chemistry, and Imaging (DAVINCI). Dr. Glaze
was born in Texas. She graduated from the University of Texas, Arlington
with a BA and MS in Physics. She received a PhD in Environmental Science
from Lancaster University in the United Kingdom. She has also previously
worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and at Proxemy Research, as Vice
President and Senior Research Scientist.

Dr Hoppy Price

Humphrey "Hoppy" Price is Chief Engineer of NASA's robotic Mars Exploration
Program. He was the architect of the JPL minimal architecture for humans to
Mars. Hoppy was the Project System Engineer for the GRAIL mission to map the
gravity field of the Moon and was the Configuration Engineer for the Cassini
Saturn orbiter mission. He was the Flight System Engineer for the
Prometheus/JIMO Phase A project and was supervisor of the systems
engineering group for Entry, Descent, and Landing on the Mars Exploration
Rovers project. He has led and participated in many formulation studies of
spacecraft and advanced propulsion systems including Mars Sample Return,
interstellar missions, solar sails, and fusion rockets. Hoppy has B.S. in
Engineering Science and M.S. in Nuclear Engineering degrees from the
University of Texas at Austin.

We are just waiting confirmation for an interview with Dr Sian Proctor -
watch this space.

Are you or anyone you know a K-12 student? Do you have some great ideas for
how humans can live and thrive on Mars?

We challenge YOU to participate in The Mars Innovation Challenge!

This is a solo or team-based challenge open to all students all over the
world in K-12, ages 5-18!

Register by submitting your entry and solve a real-world problem faced by
future explorers to Mars and present an innovation to help problem solve for
humans surviving, living, and thriving on Mars.

All eligible teams will receive an Explore Mars Completion Certificate and
have their presentations shared on our social media platforms and will be
invited to attend the 2023 Human to Mars Submit!

The overall (1st place) winner (individual/team) of the Mars Innovation
Challenge will receive a cash award of $2400* and an invitation* for the
student/team and one chaperone to present their winning Mars Innovation
Challenge Solution in person at the 2023 Humans to Mars Summit
