Hi everyone,

Welcome to a brand new year and brace yourselves.. It is going to be Epic!
We have many exciting projects lined up, including 3 special guests from the
USA in the first few months of this year!  We also have the return of our
Awesome Merchandise range, new collaborations with international partners,
the return of our annual Space tour and so much more! We are delighted to
have new schools (both local and international) join us this year and I am
planning a few International trips with some of our partner organisations!
Our first cycle of ONLINE classes will be starting up on the 1st of
February.  More information can be found below. I am involved with some
interesting Edu-partners and every now and again I will be posting wonderful
opportunities for your child to take part in an event or competition.  See
the Minecraft Airport Building competition below - which was won by a
student of ours!  We might need children to appear in an international
online event working with a famous author or scientist.  We will try to
update our website with all of these events and keep you posted.  I am
delighted to be teaching online weekly at MoMath in New York, working with
StreamableLearning.com and teaching the fabulous first graders at Pound
Ridge Elementary in New York.  Last year we had an awesome time running
in-person and online events for both Maths and Science Week in Ireland and I
am looking forward to more of these events later this year.  Our Maths
Olympiad ran very smoothly and judging by the feedback, it was a resounding
success.  Statistics and information about the event can be found on our
website. We have already started up the in-person classes and it is
wonderful to see the smiling happy faces of our students again! Thank you
for joining us on our adventure and we look forward to bringing you more
excitement as the year progresses.

Guest Speakers - We will be embarking on National tours with our speakers
and we will use venues that have backup power to ensure loadshedding does
not spoil the fun!

February: In a couple of weeks we will be hosting Prof Arthur Benjamin, AKA
The Mathemagician.  He is a human calculator and performs impressive mental
arithmetic faster than the audience can use their calculators! We are
planning to host Prof Benjamin in Cape Town, Gauteng and Durban.  The last
time he was in South Africa, every show was sold out!  Tickets will go on
sale shortly as we confirm the venues and dates.  We will also be doing some
school visits and schools will have an opportunity to register in a lottery
to be selected for a visit.

March: I am delighted to have my good friend Janet Ivey, Emmy-award winner,
Actress, Author, CEO of Explore Mars and Chief in charge of Janet's Planet
come and join us in South Africa.  There will be some public talks and some
school visits.  More information will be provided over the next week or two.

May: We are delighted to start up our Space Tour of 2023 with former NASA
Astronaut, Nicole Stott.  Nicole is an astronaut, an aquanaut, an artist and
an author. This multi-talented and exceptional presenter will be joining me
on a national tour where we will be visiting schools, putting on public
talks and connecting with the media.  This is your opportunity to meet a
real astronaut face to face!  If your business would like to be involved
with sponsoring a day or an event, please get in touch with me ASAP as we
are looking to finalize the itinerary soon.

If you want to have one of our guests come to YOUR school or you want to
host an evening event, then please complete this form:
https://forms.gle/NW1V2fmEZ6PicfQq8 .

Please note: Where possible we will be giving preference to schools enrolled
on the Living Maths program.

SPACE TOUR 2023

During the year we are often hosting role models and key players in the
space industry where we take them around to schools and arrange public
talks.  This year we will kick off with Janet Ivey in March and she will be
doing one or two public talks about Space as well as some school visits.  In
March we will then host NASA Astronaut Nicole Stott and we are finalising
public talk venues and dates as you read this.  We will have several more
Space Industry icons lined up and watch this space for announcements.  Over
the next few days we will begin posting dates and venues for our Space Tour
and other guest speakers.  Tickets will be sold on a first come first served
basis.  We will be visiting Cape Town, Gauteng, PE and possibly Durban.

Online Classes for children from Grade R (Kindergarten) to Grade 8 - Join in
on the fun! New cycle starting on 1st of February!

Cycle 1 2023  (6 weeks) will be starting up Wednesday the 1st of February
and will come to an end on the 8th of March.  Note we are now only offering
the classes on Wednesdays.

Online classes are a wonderful and safe way to take part in your favourite
extramural without leaving the comfort of your home.  Judging by the number
of students that are returning each cycle, this is a strong indicator that
they are enjoying and benefiting from the weekly classes.  If you would like
to sign up for the classes, do not waste any time.  If you snooze you lose.

Loving Maths classes are for students from Grade R(K) up to grade 3.  They
are 30 mins long and they are story based.  There will be a weekly episode
where the students will need to assist the hero/heroine solve a problem.
The lesson often ends with a fun maths related game.  Students are
introduced to problem solving and critical thinking in a fun environment.

Living Maths classes are aimed at students from Grade 4-8.  They are 1 hour
long, and each lesson is independent of the others.  We spend time working
through fun brainteasers, problems, games that involve strategy and this
often leads to fruitful and thought-provoking discussions.  It is not for
marks, and we always examine the solutions so that the students can see the
various techniques and methods of approaching the problems.

The Presenter

The classes are presented by Mr S.  I have been running Living Maths for the
past 26 years and was recently awarded the Global Teacher Award of 2020 out
of a pool of teachers from 110 countries.  I work with a few hundred
teachers around the world and I am both a Microsoft Innovator Educator
Expert as well as 1 of only 2 Global Learning Mentors in South Africa
(previously known as Skype Master Teachers).  I teach a few thousand
students every week from K- grade 12, I run monthly events for the Museum of
Mathematics in New York, I teach online classes for Streamable Learning.com
and I have presented at the South African, Namibian, Botswana, Ireland and
Berlin National Science weeks. I recently ran events for the Irish Maths and
Science Week, the UK national Science Week as well as STEM Science Camps in
the USA and UK. In short, you can be assured that the lessons are
professionally presented, and the content is of an international standard.
In other words, your child's tuition is in good hands.

The fourth annual Imagine Cup Junior for students is now live!

The Microsoft Imagine Cup Junior is a global student competition for
students ages 13-18. Through ICJ, educators utilize lessons to teach their
students about AI technologies, students form teams, and apply these lessons
to dream up a concept or idea to make a difference in their local community
or world around them. Students explain their concept in a PowerPoint
template and record a video to illustrate their concept. No coding is
required, and the competition is open to any student who is interested in
learning more about AI. New this year! We received feedback from last year
that some teams would like to build a prototype for their concept so this
year we're providing information to access
https://azure.microsoft.com/free/students/ Azure for Students where Team
Leaders can add students to collaborate and create a prototype of their
concept. Also new this year is a  https://education.minecraft.net/
Minecraft: Education Edition lesson on ethical AI. This lesson provides
educators and additional pathway to support student learning.

Merchandise

In the past we bring out a T-shirt with a fun design.  Do you remember the
"1 in a minion" "Mathstronaut in Training", etc ?  Well once the T-shirts
are ready they will be available for order and we will only be making a
limited number so first-come-first-served.  As soon as the T-shirts are
available we will re-introduce the T-shirt spotting competition where you
can win instant prizes for being spotted with our latest T-shirt.
