Maths and Educational goodies for all ages
Thu, Aug 4, 2022 10:36 PM

Hi everyone,

Wow, the past month or two have been filled with so many adventures, where
do I begin? We ended term 2 on a high.  There were many events online and in
person. I attended and presented at the WCED Maths strategy event where the
WCED shared their vision for improving maths in the Western Cape. I was
fortunate to present at 2 Curro Conferences (one in Cape Town and one in
Gauteng), I ran online Kahoots for MoMath in New York (how wonderful to meet
the many special children that I teach online), several birthday parties, a
Maths Evening at Camps Bay Primary, I travelled to the USA and presented
live at the ISTE conference (for Microsoft and Kahoot) in New Orleans, I
then ran workshops and a show live in New York at MoMath and then had the
privilege of working on 3 Astronaut training camps with the wonderful Janet
Ivey in South Carolina, Pottstown and Bluebell in PA.  The ISTE conference
was an incredible gathering of Edtech educators from around the world (50
000 of us) and we got to learn so much and share ideas with each other.  I
met some prominent players in the Edtech industry and some great projects
will be coming up very soon as a result of this conference.  Watch this
space!  Coming up soon is the national Science Festival in Botswana and our
one in South Africa.  I am looking forward to presenting at both.  We also
have our 4th cycle of online classes starting up again (see info below).  I
am currently working with Kahoot to produce some Kahoots for one of their
content partners (I can't say who but let's just say I am a huge fan
myself). The Annual Living Maths Olympiad will be coming up in October so I
will begin the process of setting the papers.  National Maths Week in
Ireland is coming up in October and National Science Week in Ireland in
November.  If all goes well I am going to be in Ireland live and in the
flesh to run a series of events.  More Streamable Learning classes in the
USA will commence online in September and we have a couple of new schools
that will be joining us soon for in person classes. I had the privilege of
being invited as a special guest for the Horizon Maths Competition.  It is a
tremendous honour when 2 of the top 3 prize winners are former students of
mine and many former and current students  received prizes that night. I am
so proud of all of them. This term is going to be very busy.  We have a
couple of interesting people coming to visit our shores (some might be
astronauts, maybe a famous mathemagician.) keep watching this space for more
announcements.

Scifest Africa

The National Science Festival of South Africa will be taking place in
Makhanda from 7 - 13 September 2022 Online classes.  I will be travelling to
the festival to run workshops, present some shows and to run some exciting
events. There will be a junior and senior Science quiz with awesome prizes
up for grabs.  If your school would like to enter then click here for South
African Schools
<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VXWZ1DiEaG7-z3KwQL1-c-RK7nO7rJ-7/view?usp=
sharing>  and click here for Schools in Africa (excluding South Africa)

near the Eastern Cape then you should definitely make a plan to visit
Scifest - there will be world class entertainers presenting and the event
promises to be an epic adventure.  For More information visit

Living Maths Olympiad 2022 for Grade R (K) to 9

The Olympiad normally takes place in October each year.  If your school is
interested in taking part then please visit our Olympiad page for more
details. https://www.livingmaths.com/?page_id=245  I will update the
notices and instructions over the next couple of weeks. This is an Olympiad
that has been running since 2000 and it caters for students from grade R
(kindergarten) to grade 9.  It is open to all levels but it does have bonus
questions to cater for the top students.  Certificates are available for the
top three individuals and pairs in the country and the world.  With over 180
000 students taking part from all over the world, you can be assured that
this is a well run and internationally recognized event.  Homeschools are
most welcome to take part too.

Online Classes for children from Grade R (Kindergarten) to Grade 8 - Join in
on the fun! New cycle starting next week!

Cycle 4 2022 (8 weeks long) will be starting up the week of Wednesday the
10th and 11th Aug 2022 and will come to an end the week of 5th  and 6th
October 2022.  There will be a one week break in between on the 7th and 8th
of September (Scifest Africa)

Online classes are a wonderful and safe way to take part in your favourite
extramural without leaving the comfort of your home.  Judging by the number
of students that are returning each cycle, this is a strong indicator that
they are enjoying and benefiting from the weekly classes.  If you would like
to sign up for the classes, do not waste any time.  If you snooze you lose.

Loving Maths classes are for students from Grade R(K) up to grade 3.  They
are 30 mins long and they are story based.  There will be a weekly episode
where the students will need to assist the hero/heroine solve a problem.
The lesson often ends with a fun maths related game.  Students are
introduced to problem solving and critical thinking in a fun environment.

Living Maths classes are aimed at students from Grade 4-8.  They are 1 hour
long, and each lesson is independent of the others.  We spend time working
through fun brainteasers, problems, games that involve strategy and this
often leads to fruitful and thought-provoking discussions.  It is not for
marks, and we always examine the solutions so that the students can see the
various techniques and methods of approaching the problems.

The Presenter

The classes are presented by Mr S.  I have been running Living Maths for the
past 26 years and was recently awarded the Global Teacher Award of 2020 out
of a pool of teachers from 110 countries.  I work with a few hundred
teachers around the world and I am both a Microsoft Innovator Educator
Expert as well as 1 of only 2 Global Learning Mentors in South Africa
(previously known as Skype Master Teachers).  I teach a few thousand
students every week from K- grade 12, I run monthly events for the Museum of
Mathematics in New York, I teach online classes for Streamable Learning.com
and I have presented at the South African, Namibian, Botswana, Ireland and
Berlin National Science weeks. I recently ran events for the Irish Maths and
Science Week, the UK national Science Week as well as STEM Science Camps in
the USA and UK. In short, you can be assured that the lessons are
professionally presented, and the content is of an international standard.
In other words, your child's tuition is in good hands.

PLEASE NOTE:  If your child has expressed interest or attended any of the
classes online we have already sent out a notice to you in addition to this
email.
